Frequently Asked Questions

What is an MRI?

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging.  It is an advanced scanning tool that allows doctors to see internal organs, bones, muscles and joints with much greater clarity than an x-ray.

Is it safe?

Yes!  An MRI machine uses magnetic fields instead of radiation to create accurate images of your insides.

Does it hurt?

No. But you are required to remain motionless during the exam.  Occasionally some patients may feel warmth in the area being scanned.  If it becomes uncomfortable or extreme, just let your technician know.

What if I’m claustrophobic?

No problem. Just tell us.  Some facilities have ‘open’ machines which are not enclosed.  Many are ‘large bore’ with big openings, not as confined.  Your provider may prescribe you a sedative to minimize any discomfort during your exam.  Whatever the case may be, we will work with you to find the best solution.

Any restrictions?

Yes.  Tell your provider or technician if you are pregnant, have recent tattoos (within 6 weeks) or have any of the following:

  • Pacemaker
  • Difibulator
  • Aneurysm clips
  • Neurostimulator
  • Metal implants
  • Cochlear implants
  • Steel surgical staples or clips

How long does it take?

Generally, check-in time is 15 minutes prior to the exam.  Exams take anywhere from 20-60 minutes, depending on the type of exam.

What should I bring?  How should I dress?

Bring a photo I.D., dress comfortably and no metal or jewelry.

Let’s get down to brass tacks… how much?

That depends on where in California that you are and what type of scan you need. The average cost of an MRI nationwide is $2600.  Our goal is to give you that same MRI for less. Much less. Our rates are typically 60% -75% lower than the national average!
